Pastoral Mentoring: For the Care of Souls

Help a local church recognize and cultivate the character of its future shepherds.

In many church cultures, potential pastors are identified primarily by intelligence, giftedness, or willingness. Jared C. Wilson directs attention to the Bible’s emphasis on character, spiritual maturity, and Christlikeness in congregational leaders.

Wilson argues that these qualities are best discerned and cultivated within a local church. While formal theological education plays an important role, the congregation is uniquely equipped to participate in training its shepherds.

This practical guide offers a perspective on ministry qualifications, identifying potential future pastors, and mentoring and training them where they already serve. Written for pastors and church leaders, it focuses on the local church’s part in preparing the next generation for the care of souls.
