Chapter One ...
There Has to Be More
Most people have seen videos of caterpillars becoming butterflies. We watch a creature that spends its life crawling emerge with wings, becoming something entirely different. It is one of nature's most remarkable transformations. Yet it raises an intriguing question: Could your life also become something far greater than it is today?
We live in a remarkable time. Social media fills our screens with smiling families, dream vacations, promotions, beautiful homes, and carefully edited snapshots of success. Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the world at an astonishing pace. Every year brings new technology, greater convenience, and more opportunities than previous generations could have imagined. Yet despite all of our progress, something hasn't changed. Anxiety, loneliness, depression, addiction, and hopelessness continue to affect millions of people. Many who appear successful on the outside quietly wrestle with emptiness on the inside. Even people who achieve wealth, recognition, or lifelong dreams often discover that the deepest questions of life remain unanswered.
Sooner or later, many people experience a quiet moment when a thought unexpectedly surfaces:
Is this all there is?
Life may be going reasonably well. The bills are paid. Work continues. Family responsibilities are being met. There is much to be grateful for. Yet beneath the routine, something gently whispers that you were created for more. That feeling is more common than most people realize.
For thousands of years, people from every culture, every generation, and every walk of life have wrestled with the same
Questions: Why am I here? What is my purpose? Why does my heart long for something more? Many spend years trying to silence those questions. They stay busy. They pursue success, pleasure, possessions, or recognition, hoping the restless feeling will eventually disappear.
But it rarely does.
What if that longing is not a weakness to overcome, but a message to understand? What if it is not evidence that something is wrong with you, but evidence that you were created for something greater?
The truth is, there is a difference between a life that merely looks successful and a life that is deeply fulfilled. You can have a full schedule and still feel empty. You can accomplish your goals and still wonder whether you were meant for something more.
Perhaps that quiet longing is not your enemy.
Perhaps it is an invitation.
An invitation to discover your true identity, your God-given purpose, and the life your Creator intended you to live.
You were made for more.
When Everything Feels Lost
Many people begin asking these deeper questions because they have spent years searching for fulfillment in all the wrong places. They sense that something is missing. They feel an emptiness they cannot quite explain. They know there must be more to life, but instead of searching upward, they often search outward.
Some turn to unhealthy habits, such as drugs, alcohol, pornography, gambling, unhealthy relationships, endless entertainment, or the pursuit of money, status, and pleasure. For a brief moment, these things may seem to satisfy the need. They may provide a false sense of temporary relief, distraction, excitement, or escape.
But eventually, something happens.
The very things they hoped would fill the emptiness often make it worse. The more they pursue them, the more dissatisfied they become. What once felt like freedom begins to feel like bondage. What promised happiness leaves them feeling empty. What seemed like an answer creates even more questions.
Many eventually find themselves worse off than before. They begin to wonder why they still feel unfulfilled despite everything they have tried. They ask themselves: Why am I still unhappy? Why do I still feel lost? Why does nothing seem to satisfy this deeper longing inside of me? What is the purpose of all of this?
Those questions can feel uncomfortable, but they are often the beginning of something important. Sometimes the search for meaning begins after we discover that the world's promises cannot deliver on their claims.
And perhaps that realization is not the end of the journey at all. Perhaps it is the beginning.

There comes a moment when we recognize that doing things our own way is not leading us where we hoped it would. The habits, choices, and priorities that once seemed promising are no longer producing peace, purpose, or what we thought was happiness. That realization can be painful, but it can also become a turning point in your life. It is often the moment when a man or woman becomes humble enough to become teachable, willing to make changes, and ready to begin building a better life.
Over the years, I have worked with hundreds of people, including many in jails and prisons. One thing I've learned is that the destructive habits that lead someone into a prison cell are the very same habits that leave millions of others living in bondage outside of prison; they are in a prison without walls, such as fear, shame, addiction, anger, or regret from the past. The walls may be different, but the bondage is often the same.
Many people think those in prison are the worst of the worst, but I will tell you that the vast majority of the people I have met were living very normal lives before allowing destructive habits to grow out of control. The same battle is taking place outside prison walls every day. Millions of people are living in prisons within themselves, searching for fulfillment while remaining trapped by unhealthy habits they believe they can never overcome.
Some men and women begin to think, “What’s the point of trying to change?”
But the truth is, some of the greatest changes in a person's life begin when they reach this point. It can be painful. It is humbling. It forces them to face the truth about their lives.
This is a turning point. Many men who later became strong, wise, and disciplined will tell me that their lives began to change when they were finally forced to confront their own actions, past mistakes, or even the injustices and wounds inflicted on them. That honest confrontation became the beginning of real change.
When Life Finally Slows Down
Today, there are constant distractions in the world—more than at any other time in history. These distractions allow people to stay busy, avoid thinking about their mistakes, and keep running from their problems. They spend countless hours chasing shiny objects that have very little, if any, value at all.
But when life slows down, you are left with your thoughts. And that can become one of the most powerful moments in a person's life.
Because when a person finally becomes honest with themselves, that is when real change can begin.
There are those who have felt deep sorrow, crushing defeat, and the weight of depression, anxiety, fear, and anger controlling their everyday lives. They know what it feels like to be trapped in bondage, even while living in a free country. But they also know what it feels like to be set free.
Through faith, humility, and a willingness to change, their worst moments became something new. What once felt like the end became the beginning of something greater. Their lives stand as evidence that healing is real, peace is possible, and miracles still happen—no matter where you start.
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5–6)
This book will show you how.
Your Life Is Transforming
A caterpillar transforms into a butterfly through a process called metamorphosis… eventually becoming something completely new.
When the caterpillar is in the cocoon, do you get to see what happens inside? No, you don’t. But does that mean nothing is happening? No. There is incredible activity happening inside that cocoon.
When the butterfly emerges, does it look like the caterpillar it once was? No. It is completely different.
I promise you, my friend, that God loves you and wants to help you. That is what this book will do—if you give it a sincere effort.
If you feel like parts of your life are trapped in chains that bind you, you can break free from these chains. Your cocoon can become a place of transformation, where your life begins to change.

Your Past Does Not Define Your Future
That is one of the greatest truths of life. However, we must also be honest with ourselves. Some of the circumstances we find ourselves in today are often influenced by the choices we made in our past.
Many people find themselves trapped in recurring cycles of depression, anxiety, discouragement, or dissatisfaction and wonder how they got there. While not every hardship is the
result of personal choices, many of the struggles we face are connected to habits, decisions, priorities, and paths we have chosen over time. Some were small choices repeated over and over. Some were big decisions made in anger, addiction, or desperation.
The good news is that if our past choices played a part in creating our current circumstances, your new good choices can help you create a different future.
The purpose of looking honestly at our past is not to live in guilt or shame. Our past is only to be learned from. Once we understand what brought us to this point, we can begin making better decisions that lead us toward the life we truly want.
Your past may explain where you are, but it does not have to determine where you go from here.
Here is an eternal truth: the scriptures teach that this earth was created so that we, as Heavenly Father’s children, could come here on earth and learn, through our own experience, the difference between good and evil.
In a very real sense, Heavenly Father knew we would make mistakes when we came to this earth Romans 3:23, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. However, he knew that once we recognized the pain, guilt, and regret that we felt after making mistakes, we would learn from them. The pain and sorrow that follow wrong choices can become powerful teachers. Through those experiences, we can learn to turn away from what destroys our peace and choose what is right. And then learn how to turn away from those choices. As we abandon what destroys our peace and choose what is right, we begin to find the freedom, peace, and true joy that come from making the right choices.
But no matter how you arrived here, one truth remains: Your past does not have to dictate your future. The question is, will you let it? That decision is up to you. This book will show you how to begin your new life for real and put plans in place that will keep it there throughout your life.
Isaiah 48:17 Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.
What Really Matters
Let me ask you something.
Imagine you are on a remote island with no internet, television, or radio, and your favorite football team has just played in the Super Bowl. You have no idea who won.
Several days later, you arrive at an airport. You run to a newspaper, grab it, flip to the sports section, and look only at the halftime score. Then you put down the paper and walk away.
What is wrong with that story?
You’re right—nobody would do that. Why? Because nobody cares about the halftime score once the game is over. The final score is the only score that matters.
So why do you look at yourself and your life differently?
You may be only in the first quarter, at halftime, or in the third quarter of your life. I have heard far too many people say that their addictions, destructive habits, or past mistakes are simply too powerful to overcome. They have resigned themselves to living in bondage because they no longer believe change is possible.
My friend, you do not have to surrender to that kind of life. Your story is not over, and lasting change is absolutely possible. Never accept defeat when the game is still being played. Your future can—and will—be bright.
What would you say if your favorite basketball team was losing 67–23 at halftime, threw the ball into the stands, walked off the court, and announced, “We’re done. We’re out of here”?
Of course, the crowd would be upset. The team had committed to playing until the very end. As long as the fans saw the players giving their best, they would continue to love and support their favorite team.
I’m not suggesting that we keep running the same plays we used during the first half. That would be a mistake because those plays have left us behind. I’m saying that we can—and must—add the Savior to our team. Let's run the plays he has given us.
When you include Him in your life, you will discover that He can make far more of your life than you could ever make of it on your own.
There is no bad habit, no destructive lifestyle, and no power on this earth greater than the atoning power of Jesus Christ. If you allow the Savior to join your team, you can be assured that your final score will be a victory.

Identity Shapes Behavior
People naturally move in the direction of what they believe about themselves. If they believe they are weak, broken, hopeless, or destined to fail, their actions will often follow those beliefs. But when they begin to understand who they truly are— sons and daughters of God with divine worth, eternal potential, and a future greater than their past—something begins to change deep within them.
Their thinking changes. Their desires and choices begin to change.
Why?
Because true identity shapes behavior.
Real transformation happens from the inside out. When people learn, believe, and live by the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Savior changes the way they see themselves. Instead of seeing only shame, failure, anger, weakness, or regret, they begin to recognize their great worth and eternal potential. They begin to understand that Heavenly Father has not given up on them.
At first, it may be only a spark. They hear the truth. Then they begin to see it. Then they begin to believe it. Eventually, as they continue seeking God and living by His truth, they naturally begin to feel differently. This is where real and lasting transformation begins.
Behavior alone is not enough. Many people try to change their behavior without changing the identity beneath it. They may stop lying, control their anger, or give up destructive habits. But if, deep down, they still believe, I will never measure up, I am a loser. I will never change. I always fail. This is simply who I am; the old life will continue pulling them back because the identity beneath the behavior was never healed. At its core, that is one of Satan’s greatest lies.
The gospel offers a new identity. Through Jesus Christ, people can become new creatures. Paul declared, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13). This is not pretending. It is not false confidence, and it is not perfection overnight. It is real change over time through repentance, truth, discipline, grace, and the power of God.
People who once lived in darkness can gradually become people of integrity, strength, honesty, discipline, peace, and faith—not because they suddenly become flawless, but because they stop identifying themselves by their worst mistakes. Their new identity begins creating new desires, and those new desires begin producing new choices.
If people see themselves as worthless, their thoughts will eventually reflect that false belief. But as they begin believing the truths taught by God, everything starts to change. They begin to understand: I am a child of God. My life has purpose. Through Jesus Christ, I can rebuild my life. My past does not have to become my future.
Those new beliefs gradually reshape their thoughts, choices, and habits.
“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). What people truly believe deep inside eventually becomes visible on the outside. Paul taught the same truth: “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). Transformation begins in the mind before it appears in behavior.
Paul also declared, “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away” (2 Corinthians 5:17). Christ does not simply patch up the old person. He helps create someone new. Through humility, faith, change, and obedience, He can turn our weaknesses into strength.
Here’s a great truth for you to understand: transformation happens more quickly and completely when the heart and spirit are changed through studying and living the Savior’s teachings than when people focus only on changing their outward behavior. Spiritual transformation reaches far deeper than surface motivation alone.
People who continually tell themselves they will never measure up will usually live beneath their potential. But those who begin to see themselves as God sees them start to carry themselves differently. They begin making decisions that align with their true identity. Over time, their lives change from the inside out. People do not permanently change simply by trying harder. They change when truth enters the mind, God enters the heart, and a new identity begins replacing the old. That is when new behavior can become lasting—because it is no longer driven by temporary emotion or anchored in Satan’s lies. It is anchored in truth, purpose, and the identity God declared from the beginning.
Throughout this book, we will examine every aspect of this transformation in greater depth. We will discover how thoughts shape our direction, how destructive habits create bondage, how better habits are built, how discipline and self-mastery are developed, and how character and integrity create a life that lasts. Most importantly, we will discover how Jesus Christ can transform the heart and help us become the people God created us to be.
You are not trapped by your past.
Through Jesus Christ, you can change not only what you do, but who you become.
Sometimes lasting change begins with discovering who God created you to be…
